Horsham

/ˈhɔʃəm/ (say 'hawshuhm)

noun
a city in central western Victoria, on the Wimmera River; commercial centre for much of the Wimmera district.
The Horsham district lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Jardwadjali people and is part of the region described in 1836 by explorer Thomas Mitchell as Australia Felix. Runs were taken up here from 1841, and by the late 1840s the village of Horsham, with a store and post office, had grown on the boundary between two of these runs. There was little further development until 1871–72, when land in the area was opened for agriculture, leading to rapid growth to service the expanding population of the surrounding plains. Horsham is now the commercial and administrative centre of the Wimmera; the district produces wool, grain, fat lambs, pigs and poultry.
